"What We Heard"

ASCA Directors had concern regarding the April 1, 2018 decision of the Nova Scotia provincial government to dissolve all seven of its English-language school boards.

At the 2018 AGM, the issue was presented in an engagement discussion format for member school councils to share thoughts and capture the input to appropriately prepare for action should the issue arise in Alberta.

The engagement discussion results are captured from member school council group responses (not individuals), sorted into themes and summarized, as outlined in this report.

ASCA Member Perspectives on Locally Elected School Boards REPORT 2018

The Alberta School Councils’ Association (ASCA) has a School Council Engagement Task Force comprised of member school council parents who act in an advisory capacity to the Board of Directors.

The Board sees tremendous value in a group of “on-the-ground” connected parents, engaged in education through their school council, to assist the ASCA with advocacy efforts. Access to a group of “readily available” members enable the Board to assess new directions for the Association, seek advice on advocacy approaches, and gather views on emerging education issues or trends.

This section shares the perspectives, or a summary of "What we Heard" back from members in response to topics or questions posed by the Board on a variety of relevant matters.
