The Minister’s Youth Council gives students an opportunity to provide input on education initiatives and engage with the ministry as partners. It also provides the Minister of Education and the Alberta government with the opportunity to recognize student voice and engage with a representative group of students from across the province.
Purpose, Selection Criteria and Term for the Minister’s Youth Council
The council will consist of approximately 32 junior and senior high school students, ages 14 to 19, with diverse interests, identities, backgrounds and perspectives from all regions of Alberta. Government will be accepting up to eight returning council members and a minimum of 24 new students.
The council will have a 10-month term that will align with the 2019/20 school year. As council members, students will meet three times during the school year: in fall 2019, winter 2020 and spring 2020. Meetings will begin Friday evening and run through to Monday afternoon. There will also be an opportunity for the students to interact with one another outside of these meetings to discuss ideas and upcoming activities.
