ASCA 2020 AGM (update) Summary of Results
ASCA (Virtual) Annual General Meeting (AGM) April 26, 2020
The 2020 AGM was held via Zoom Conferencing Webinar platform and utilized ElectionBuddy voting software.
A modified agenda was presented to include only key items of business for the virtual AGM:
Special Resolution (SR20-01) to amend bylaws, Presentation of Financial Reports, Board Elections/acclamations, and to postpone discussion of the 2020 Proposed Advocacy Resolutions to a fall general meeting.
The meeting was called to order at 9 am. by President A. Purcell-Pike, after the National anthem (YouTube link) was played.
Director Lisa Arlint provided a Territory Acknowledgement.
President’s Address was presented by President A. Purcell-Pike.
Motion 1: Does your school council agree to allow virtual/electronic participation and voting for the ASCA 2020 AGM? Yes
Motion 2: Does your school council agree to postpone discussion of the Proposed Advocacy Resolutions to October 17, 2020? Yes
Motion 3: Does your school council approve Becky Kallal as the Parliamentarian? Yes
Parliamentarian presented an overview of virtual meeting protocols and online etiquette.
Motion 4: Does your school council accept the 2020 AGM Rules of Order as presented/amended?
An amendment to Rule 15 was presented, discussed and debated at length – to ALLOW Emergent Resolutions to be considered at this AGM. Amendment passed. Amended Rules of Order passed.
Motion 5: Does your school council adopt the 2020 AGM Agenda as presented/amended?
An addition to the Agenda to consider an Emergent Resolution.
Motion 6: Does your school council approve the 2019 Draft Annual General Meeting Minutes as presented? Yes
Director Jacquie Surgenor presented the Financial Report
- Audited Financial Statement, Auditor’s Report 2018-2019 fiscal year
- Membership Fees
- Board-approved 2020-2021 Budget
Credentials Report: number of votes in the meeting room was 103.
Resolutions Chair(s) Vice President Brandi Rai and Director Shelley Odishaw - presentation and background on ASCA Board sponsored Special Resolution SR20-01. (To allow an ASCA Member School Council to participate in decision making – VOTING, electronically, virtually or digitally.)
Motion 7: Does your school council approve the Special Resolution to amend ASCA Bylaws Articles 3 and 5 as presented? Yes
Motion 8: Emergent Resolution: Online Learning Advocacy Recommendations, was defeated.
Nominations Chair(s) Director Lisa Arlint and Director Sarah Rollingson presented an overview of the nominations process, confirmation and affirmation of nominations received for the Board of Directors Election. Candidates delivered individual speeches (3 minutes each) to the assembly.
President: Affirmation of Acclamation – Brandi Rai
Vice President: Affirmation of Acclamation – Shelley Odishaw
Directors Election: 2-Year Term, five (5) positions; six (6) candidates present to accept nomination.
Directors: 1-Year Term, one (1) position; max. two (2) candidates
No candidates eligible for the 1 year position – no election required.
First Call for Proposed 2021 Advocacy Resolutions
Closing Remarks and Adjournment 4:30 pm.
Results summary – Proposed Advocacy Resolutions go to a fall meeting for consideration, new Board was elected, and virtual voting is expected to be allowed for the association going forward.
ASCA plans to host a Regular General Meeting on Saturday, October 17, 2020 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm for consideration of the 2020 Proposed Advocacy Resolutions and any other business deemed essential by the Board at that time.
If possible, this meeting will be in-person and may also incorporate ‘virtual voting’. If meeting in-person is not possible, it will be a virtual meeting. More information will be provided as available.
