Information on the Alberta Teachers' Association/Government Agreement

Labour peace in Alberta's classrooms is welcome news for parents - knowing that their children's learning will not be interrupted for the coming four years.

Labour stability is certainly good for Alberta's classrooms and students, however, that guarantee may come with a cost.

The agreement has elements that could affect the classroom, and parents need to understand the details and how it will impact student learning in their school and/or district.

How will the 907 hours cap on teacher instruction time affect the classroom? Will there be cuts to programs? What about class size? Rural and remote schools, inclusive classrooms? How will costs be covered in addition to the recent education budget implications?

We encourage parents to connect with their school trustees and their children's teachers and principals, to discuss exactly what this agreement will mean to their classrooms and children's learning opportunities.

We have developed a list of sample questions school council and parents can ask their school trustees, principal or superintendent about the elements of the agreement and their impact.
