Making School Mathematics Make Sense

St Leo’s Elementary School (gymnasium)

6220 Lakeview Dr SW, Calgary

Thursday, November 19, 2015 - 7:00 to 8:15 pm.
There is no admission charge

Dr. James Tanton is recognized internationally for his ability to make mathematical ideas, concepts and “FACTS” simple to understand, repeat, practice and apply in solving problems. He stresses the need to teach students to THINK their way through solutions, and then demonstrates using “common sense” approaches.

This presentation will focus specifically on seeing and understanding a way to make the arithmetic we learned in school come alive with meaning. It is very relevant to the mathematics taught from Grades 4 to 12.

"Come see what joyful, natural, and profound mathematics thinking can truly be for you and for your children. Come learn the power of Exploding Dots and feel your own mathematics education suddenly - and finally - "click."

Experience how the power of understanding trumps memorization. The BASICS do matter. Come see how they can be learned with understanding.” James Tanton, PhD, Princeton

Parent Comments:

This was wonderful! It’s the way I wish I had understood math in school.

Thank you for helping me see math as a beautiful thing. I am now excited to help my children. Amazing session!

James’ message that it is ok to not know the answer and have to figure out how to work through it is a life skill.

Thank you for giving me ideas and the confidence to continue to “help”/”teach” my child at home to visualize the problem!
