There are a number of myths and misconceptions about French immersion. For example, some people believe that the French immersion program is ‘suitable’ for some but not all learners, a view that serves to perpetuate the elitist characterization of French immersion. Others believe that children must have certain attributes in order to be successful in the program. Beliefs such as these have no empirical support, and more often than not, they result in barriers that restrict access to French immersion for some students. In this presentation, Dr. Nancy Wise will attempt to dispel myths and address misconceptions by sharing research evidence obtained by leading immersion investigators.
